IVECO HAS launched a highpower three-litre engine which promises to raise the upper weight limit of the Daily range to a full 7.5 tonnes GVW.

Currently on offer powering a maximum 6.5-tonne GVW, the new 166hp engine gives the Daily the power to compete at the higher weight, says Iveco's light commercial vehicle marketing boss Alessandro Cicchetti.

Discussions on this topic are continuing within the company, he adds, with a higher weight introduction possible by 2006. The brakes on the Daily will require upgrading for 7.5-tonne operation, but apart from that the vehicle will change little.

iveco unveiled its all-new threelitre engine at the Hanover show last month. It's available in 166 or 136hp versions with torque output of 380 and 320Nm respectively.

Both versions of the engine incorporate common-rail fuelinjection technology, while the 166hp unit also benefits from a new variable-geometry turbocharger.
