Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ARANGE of filters having sintered porous-metal discs has been developed by G. and A. Firkins, Ltd., 84 Darlington Street, Wolverhampton, for the oil fuel and lubricating systems of oil engines with outputs up to 500 b.h.p. Six standard sizes are produced for 1-in. to 2-in, pipes, and a maximum rated flow of 2,000 gal. an hour.

The filtration range is 1i microns to 30 microns according to the grade of disc employed, of which there are five for each size. The discs recommended for oil fuel systems are of the 8-10micron grade, and the 10-12-micron grade is recommended for filtering lubricating oil.

It is claimed that particles of a smaller size are removed during normal operation. The oil flows from the outside of the disc pack to the inside, and the particles can be easily removed from the surface by washing in solvent or reverse blowing with compressed air. Detergent additives are not arrested.

The standard disc material is bronze. Discs of alternative materials are available for special uses and others arc being developed. A universal type of mounting bracket is employed which allows reversal of the inlet and outlet and enables the filter to be located upwards or downwards.
