• Although Jacksons of Hull (Haulage) Ltd had, in theory, a satisfactory vehicle maintenance system, in practice it was not being properly implemented.

This was said by vehicle examiner Mr D. Sager at a public enquiry at Leeds last week when the company applied to the Yorkshire LA, Maj-Gen Sir John Potter, to take over the licence originally held by C. Jackson and Sons of Hull. The examiner had told the LA that he had reached this conclusion following maintenance inspections carried out between May 6 and 14 this year when two vehicles and three trailers had been examined. One vehicle had been issued with a delayed prohibition order.

The secretary and director of the company, Mr Charles A. Jackson, told LA that in the past the company had relied on its own maintenance staff but now intended to contract maintenance work out to a local garage.

After deciding to grant three vehicles and six trailers to the company's application, which originally was for seven vehicles and 14 trailers, Sir John commented: "You have not attempted to hide any fact and I therefore decide to grant this licence in part only as I feel that you are not yet ready for a larger fleet."
