• Ryder Truck Rental is to enter the leasing market, in addition to its hire-drive activities. The president of Ryder, Mr Van Allen, said this week that the company would be diversifying into many sectors of the transport industry during the next 12 months and that the company's American organization would be superimposed on the British and European markets.
The company is also likely to be applying for an operator's licence so it can supply vehicles with drivers, but it was emphasized to CM that this was to cater for the
requirements of the own-account operator and that the company had no interest in general haulage.
One aspect of the Ryder plan is to research the motorway network and ascertain whether a more sophisticated motorway service area, designed principally for commercial vehicles, might be required. Mr Bob Anderson, managing director of the Ryder organization in the United Kindom, added the company is considering the possibility of incorporating transfer terminals into its service station complex.
