• A demand that the practice of carrying out routine goods vehicle enforcement checks on motorway hard shoulders should be suspended inunediately has been made to the Department of the Environment by the Freight Transport Association.
In the Association's view there could be very serious hazards to both lorry drivers and enforcement staff in continuing to check vehicles on hard shoulders — which should be kept free for emergency purposes. The result of any motorway user not being able to take refuge on the hard shoulder in an emergency because of the presence of parked commercial vehicles could have disastrous consequences.
Enforcement of goods vehicle regulations could, said the Association, be carried out perfectly adequately by checks at motorway service stations and on access roads.
• The transportation committee of Liverpool City Council is to introduce traffic regulation orders prohibiting the overnight and weekend parking of goods vehicles over 30cwt from the roads of housing estates.
