• A Government U-turn has dashed Thames Estuary tipper operators' hopes of a bonanza in imported building materials transportation over the next 20 years.
The publication of the longawaited Minerals Planning Guidelines by the Department of the Environment waters down its original proposals to make increased use of coastal usuperquarries".
Under the published plans, only four superquarries could now be developed including the existing site in Scotland.
But additional tippers will be needed inland as the DoE aims to encourage recycling and useage of mineral waste materials: operators based near iron and steel works and china clay works will benefit.
