Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Conditional notice of termination of milk collection and haulage contracts go out to Milk Marketing Board subcontractors next week, in preparation for vesting day on 1 November. The six-month notice period will be extended if there are delays to this expected date, when the MMB ceases to be responsible for milk buying in England and Wales.

Meanwhile, NFC spent over Elm this week in buying the finished product warehousing operation and distribution depot of Dairy Crest at Hemel Hempstead. DC is the arm's-length food processing arm of the MMB.

NFC takes over the existing contracts for UK and Ireland distribution and responsibility for leasing of equipment and vehicles.

"The operation, which will absorb the 97 employees and eight drivers based at Crewe, will be included under the Exel Logistics specialist grocery wing," says NFC.

Around £1.2m in cash was paid for DC's main reception centre for temperature-controlled goods including cheese and butters, but no milk.

DC still operates 17 milk handling depots, while independent hauliers are waiting to hear if bids to lease 23 others currently operated by DC's transport arm Dairy Products Transport, have been successful. Names of the successful bidders will be announced at the end of May; the new tenants will take over some time in June or July. NEC declines to say if it has put in its own quote. Dairy transport hauliers await result of bids to lease 17 depots.
