Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The article on Debt Collection in Money Matters in 31 March issue caught my eye.

My husband is an ownerdriver and has been for a number of years. Until recently he has been making a reasonable living out of his work.

Things began to worsen as the recession took hold and we pulled in our belts to work through it.

The first blow was when the company we worked for started to delay payments for up to four months and we had to fight for the money due to us. We eventually got it in dribs and drabs.

The second blow was last December when a company owing us a lot of money went into administration.

Up to then we had always paid our way and on time and had not incurred any huge debts. We used up all our resources and dipped into our savings and managed to pay all the outstanding fuel bills, apart from one. My husband went to the bank and told them what had happened. The response was "What are you going to do about it?". At this stage we did not know.

We cleared the bank debt incurred by the bounced cheque, from our savings, and left without any offer of advice or help.

The tax man was just as unsympathetic and told us we would accrue interest on a daily basis. Again, we had always paid up on time.

Can you tell me what purpose it serves being honest about your financial position when all you get is knocked down further?

My husband works extremely hard and was looking forward to an early comfortable retirement. We can no longer consider that

and must struggle to make up our losses.

There is no protection for people like my husband and there are many in the same position. Apart from creating laws to make large companies pay up on time, they should also have lessons on greed.
