Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

It's not every day the government gives some of your taxes back, but the Freight Best Practice initiative offers free advice to operators to boost their efficiency. In the third of eight case studies we look at two companies which concentrated on aerodynamics...

Who:

TNT Express and Somerfield Petri companies have an innovative approach to aerodynamics.

Fleet:

TNT Express 380 tractor units Somerfield 698 tractor units

Business:

TNT Express fleet handles multi-drop door-to-door deliveries throughout the UK carrying documents, parcels and other small items.

Somerfield's fleet services more than 1,200 of the supermarket giants high-street food stores.

Objective:

TNT Express and Somerfield operate different types of tractor units and semi-trailers.

However, by setting up an aerodynamic efficiency programme both companies set out to: • Cut fuel consumption • Streamline their respective fleets.

Results:

TNT evaluated aerodynamic kit on two of its vehicles and compared their performance with those of its standard trucks.

The aerodynamic features included: • A cab roof fairing

• Cab extension panels and mudguard panels • Side skirts • Air dam on tractor unit • Semi-trailer front fairing • Curved edge on trailer roof • Rear quarter panel.

TNT Express has made an estimated fuel saving of 15.8%. This equates to an annual saving of 10,895Iit per vehicle, worth about E8,700 at current diesel prices. Somerfield's 698 tractor units are equipped with full-cab aero kits, including cab roof deflectors and cab extension panels. Their double-deck semi-trailers have been made more streamlined by rounding the roof on the semitrailer to join the line of the tractor unit deflector a Fuel Saving Curve (FSC) design.

Somerfield cut fuel consumption by 7% per vehicle; a saving of nearly £4,600 per year.

These companies featured in a Freight Best Practice publication explaining how to optimise fuel efficiency. To read it in full visit www.freightbestpractice.org.uk or call the hatlirm 0845 8770 877
