THE GMB UNION will meet Cleanaway bosses next month in a final attempt to resolve industrial unrest at the waste company's Kings Lynn, Norfolk depot.

Drivers on Cleanaway's domestic refuse contract were threatening to strike in protest at attacks by the public and bad management practices (CM 7 September).

The union says the contract to remove residents' recyclable waste has resulted in a series of attacks, including one that put a driver in hospital.

GMB organiser Glen Holdom says he is quietly confident the situation will be sorted out when "high level talks" take place on 19 October. "We are still talking about potential industrial action," he says."

We are gearing the timetable for industrial action on or around those talks if they are not successful. But there are background noises that there will be some movement in [Cleanaway's] position."

A total of 58 drivers and loaders could be balloted for strike action, out of a workforce of 65. No-one from Cleanaway was prepared to comment as CM went to press,

• Refuse collection teams working for Cleanaway on a contract with West Wiltshire District Coundl have staged a second work-torule as part of a continuing dispute over working hours.
