* Drivers in Albania have been stopped and fined in recent weeks for not carrying an international driving licence. A British licence without a photo is not recognised by Albanian police. Drivers are also reminded to make sure their insurance documents are up to date.
* Austria has abolished the discount arrangements For trucks transiting the country via the Brenner rnotorways. The cost remains 1,000 schillings (£63) for all types of vehicle.
* Attempts are being made to persuade the Czechs to accept credit cards For road charges.Cash is currently the only method of payment.
* Poland has introduced new transport tax discs, obtainable at customs posts. Charges are 15 zloty (£4.40) per week, ZI50 (£14.50) per month and ZI480 (£138) per year.
*Romanian authorities are insisting that TIR carnet vehicles are escorted where duties payable on the load exceed $50,000 or where goods are to be loaded during the journey without the permission of customs. Escorts cost 25p/km and £3.50/hr during delays.
* A number of British drivers have been fined on the Continent for removing tachograph charts. It seems that France and Germany are going to interpret the rules more strictly than others.
* German customs are writing direct to TIR carnet hauliers asking for settlement of claims. This is contrary to the T1R Convention: all claims should go through the IRU and tied organisations.
