BE LAZ

The Soviet-built Belaz 256B 6x4 dump truck is designed as an off-road vehicle but if required can be converted at UMO to meet C U Regulations. The off-road model is plated to 26 tons gvw and can handle payloads up to 15 tons. The on-road conversion is plated for operation to 24 tons gvw but maximum payload drops to 12.5 tons. Powered by a 14.8-litre V8 diesel engine, drive is transmitted via a 16in. dia twin-plated clutch to a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox, thence by two prop shafts, one to each of the axles.
BERLIET

French truck manufacturer, Berliet (UK) Citax Ltd. is aiming to have its first vehicle ready for delivery here in March '74. The first vehicles to be offered will be the TR280 tractive unit and a range of 4x4, 6x4, and 6x6 tippers. The TR280, GBM 12 heavy tipper uses a Berliet MS635 turbocharged 12-litre in-line six-cylinder engine which produces 260 bhp at 1800 rpm. The TR280 will be available with rhd and will use a Fuller 9509A gearbox. Lhd tipper chassis could be delivered before March but rhd models will be available only from March on.
CITROEN
Citroen Cars Ltd, Trading Estate, Slough, Bucks.
The AMI 8 and GS vans are the only commercial vehicles Citroen imports. The AM I carries a payload of 7.25cwt and is available with either a 602cc engine producing 35 bhp or 1.015-litre engine which produces 68 bhp. The GS van has a payload capacity of 8.5cwt and is powered by either 1.015-litre 61 bhp engine or a larger 1.222-litre engine producing 65.5 bhp. The van features hydropneumatic suspension, which keeps the vehicle level regardless of load, and dualcircuit servo-assisted disc brakes at each wheel.
JEEP
American Motors Corporation (GB) Ltd, Chiswick Flyover, Great West Rd, London W4.
Two basic models of Jeep, the CJ-5 and CJ-6, are imported. Available in metal or soft canvas top versions, the CJ-6 has a payload capacity of 1 ton. the CJ-5 about 19cwt. A transfer box permits selection of four-wheel drive for off:road operation.
MAGIRUS-DEUTZ

On and off-road versions of 6x4 and 6x6 dump trucks are distributed in the UK. On-road versions are plated to 24 tons gvw, while off-road vehicles can carry a maximum payload of 14.8 tons. New models expected to be available later this year are a four-axle 30-ton-gvw rigid, and two tractive units, one for operation at 32 tons gcw, the other up to 38 tons gcw.
MAZDA

Only one model, the Mazda 1600 pick-up, is imported by this.company. A normal-control vehicle, it can carry a payload up to 1 ton. It is fitted with a 1600cc overhead cam, cross-flow-head petrol engine producing 70 bhp at 5000 rpm (SAE gross).
MERCEDES-BENZ
Mercedes-Benz (GB) Ltd, Great West Rd, Brantford, Middlesex.
The Mercedes-Benz range of vehicles starts at 3 tons gross with the front-wheel-drive L206 and L406 vans, and progresses via L406 and L408 and 5-ton panel vans to the L808 8-ton-gvw light truck. LP 1319 and LP 1418 are 14-ton and 16-ton rigids respectively which have sufficient horsepower available to haul a drawbar trailer. The LPS 1418 is a tractive unit suitable for 32 tons gcw and the LPS 1924 is a tractive unit for use up to 38 tons gcw.
PEUGEOT
Peugeot Automobiles United Kingdom Ltd, Peugeot House, Western Avenue, W3.
Peugeot imports two vehicles, the 404 1-ton pick-up derived from the 404 private car and the J7 28 /36cwt payload-capacity integral construction light van. Both are available with petrol or diesel engine options.
RENAULT
Renault Ltd, Western Avenue, London W3 ORZ.
The Renault 7cwt car-derived van has its gearbox mounted ahead of a conventionally located four-cylinder in-line engine. Torsionbar suspension is used throughout and the body features a hinged flap above the rear door to facilitate loading of bulky items or carriage of step ladders, etc.
SCAN IA

Scania offers its lightest model, LI380, in two-axle rigid and tractive unit forms at 32 tons gcw. The same engine and transmission is used in the LBS 85 MS three-axle 24-ton-gvw rigid: a short-wheelbase chassis is available for a tipper and a long-wheelbase chassis as a haulage vehicle. LB 110 and LB 140 models are offered in rigid and artic form in two and three-axle configurations.
SIMCA

The French-built Simca 1100 8cwt van, the only Chrysler car-derived van available in the UK, has a transverse-mounted engine and electrically driven, thermostatically controlled radiator fan. The engine produces 54 bhp at 6000 rpm (DIN gross) and drive is transmitted via a single-plate clutch ,nd four-speed synchromesh gearbox to the fr-nt wheels.
TOYOTA

VOLKSWAGEN

Pick-up trucks, integral vans and vehicles ahle to seat up to 12 persons are imported by Volkswagen. Each model is based on the
K ombi. Van payload capacity is approximately 1 ton. Models are fitted with flat-four petrol engine of either 1.58 or 1.8-litre capacity. The larger-engined models are available with a three-speed automatic instead of the standard four-speed synchromesh transmission.
VOLVO

Volvo imports three basic models — F86, F88 and F89. The F86 is available as a two-axle drawbar rigid and as a tractive unit for operation at 32 tons gcw. The F88 is available in the same configurations but has a higher output engine and transmission. The F89 has a 320 bhp turbocharged engine and being available only in left-hand drive is intended mainly for TIR work.
