• Cheshire's chief inspector of Trading Standards and Consumer Affairs, Mr Kenneth Nattrass, says in his annual report that over a 12-month period 35 per cent of the heavy goods vehicles examined in the county were found to he overloaded.
Of a total of 5837 lorries stopped in spotchecks,.1604 of these were weighed and 557 found to be overloaded.
Such a high percentage of overloading was clearly unsatisfactory from several points of view. Legislation should aim at ensuring heavy goods vehicles were operated safely and that "one transport operator should not seek an unfair advantage over another by overloading".
As well as a need for further investigations into the problem of overloading there was also a need for extra large capacity and well-situated weighbridges, says the report. A weighing machine with the necessary accuracy was being developed.
