A Summary of Incidents During the Course of a Noteworthy Journey.

IN our issue dated August 24th we published prelirainary details of a tour by a Model 409 A.F.C. bus, which set out a few days earlier on"a demonstration run to Blidapesth, during which it was to pass through s01110 of the principal central European towns. The vehicle left London an August 14th, and arrived in Badapesth on the opening days of September.

The bus was shipped to Hamburg, and on the first stage of its run to Berlin the roadswere in an indifferent state, and at one point the vehicle sank into the surface up to the back axle It was assisted out by the aid of a steamroller and the German capital eventually reached, the journey of 190 miles .being accomplished in 10 hours. Some time was spent in the city, during which demonstrations were given to a number of important transport undertakings.

Leipeig was the next big city mapped out on the itinerary, and the journey from Berlin to this centre occasioned some . misgivings by reason of certain sections of the road being

lined with orchards. Here the fruit trees grew so close to the roadside that their', branches intertwined and did not leave sufficient height for the covered-in -double-decker to proceed witbout -difficulty. The windows of the top deck were lowered, to prevent them from being broken and the vertical pillars served to brush aside the branches, although in the process the top deck became covered with leaves, plums, apples and twigs.

Only a short stay was made in Lein*, after which the journey was continued to Bayreuth, Possau and Regensburg. Unfortunately, a bridge, which just Prevented, the passage of the bus, was encountered a shOrt distance from the firstnamed centre and a long detour became essential over bad roads to. Weiden, in the course of which the road again gave way and oxen were used to extricate the vehicle.

Upon approaching Weiden it was found that the entrances to the town would not allow the bus to proceed, and a special track, nearly a mita in length, was Made across fields in order to reach the destination; this incident is depicted in one of our illustrations. Between Weiden and Regensburg it was found necessary to negotiate a hill with a -gradient of one in three, but the double-decker clinibed this with characteristic ease.

Regensburg was reached Cu August 25th, and on account of the narrowness of the streets in this town careful driving to avoid shop signs and the like proved essential. At this stage enquiries were being received from Budapesth for the bus, and to avoid •possible delay, which appeared likely on account of the difficulty of negotiating certain bridges and because the country between Vienna and Budapesth was reported under floods, it was decided to send the vehicle on a barge by river, leaving demonstrations in other towns for a later period.

At the request of the Bintapesth Autobus Co., the vehicle will remain for some weeks in that city, working under actual service conditions, and it hoped that in this way the vehicle will be able to prove its allround capabilities to . the interested authorities.
