Ferguson gets rail freight thumbs-up

FERGUSON TRANSPORT (Spean Bridge) has bee given the green light by The Highland Council to build , rail freight terminal in Corpach, Fort William.

The plans are linked to proposals by Ferguson Tram port customer BSW sawmills to transfer its operatio from one side of the A830 to the other at the former Arj, Wiggins woodyard in Corpach.

The company says that if all goes to plan the terminal may be built by April 2011 and include a daily return train service between Corpach and central Scotland, where swap bodies can then be transferred onto International rail freight trains, which currently deliver to and from the south of England.

Alasdair Ferguson, Ferguson Transport MD, hopes to attract freight facilities grants to help fund the project. He adds: "We are keeping the Scottish Executive up to speed with the process, have a good dialogue, and the support and response from them has been positive."
