French protests cause havoc for UK hauliers

HAULIERS ON THE Continent are facing fuel shortages and delayed journeys as a result of French truckers and oil refinery workers staging walkouts in protest over pension reforms.

As CM went to press. it is understood that out of some 12.500 petrol stations across France. 2.500 had run out of fuel.

Liam Northfield. media relations manager at the Freight Transport Association, says: "We know that just one hour sitting in traffic costs an HGV about 1:40. With fuel blockades adding to the disruption in the supply chain, once again UK businesses will be bearing the brunt of actions beyond their control:

A spokesman at Kueline JNagel adds: "The cost factor will hit us if the strike continues much longer, as then most of the truckers that are using France for delivery and/or trans-shipments, will run out of fuel."

He adds there is also an increased cargo theft risk, as police are directing drivers to parking areas that -are in many cases unknown to us".

The protests, which truck drivers began on Sunday night (17 October), are in response to the French government's plans to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 and the full state pension age from 65 to 67
