Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

As a young reader of CM I have read your articles on Education and Training with interest. I am 19, have seven GCE 0 levels, have studied for GCE A levels and would very much like to make a career in road transport.

Five months ago. I gave up my job as a van driver for a small meat packing firm so I could embark upon my chosen career. I have written to a number of large hauliers, expressing my wish to start a career and if they would consider employing me as a trainee. None could give me a positive reply; two very large concerns did not reply at all. I have advertised in newspapers and your own publication but only received one reply. Despite being registered at the Job Centre and private employment agencies, to whom I have stressed the fact that I am prepared to work anywhere, I have not been notified of a single vacancy.

Ideally. I would like the opportunity to learn all aspects of the road haulage business and to be able to study towards qualifications. I realise that, like so many other industries, road transport firms have had to impose economic restraint on themselves and to some degree this accounts for the lack of training opportunities, but surely there must be more openings into such a large and important industry than I have been able to find.

I would be very glad of any help or advice.
