Figures issued by the ciety of Motor Manufac-ers and Traders show that 9,481 commercial vehicles ..re sold in the first nine miths of 1977 — 5.8 per cent on the same period of 1976. Leyland headed the overall les table for September with 100 sales and 27.7 per cent of e market. Ford came in send with 4,575 sales and 25.8 r cent of the market.
3edford sold 3,117 vehicles and had 17.6 per cent of the market, while Chrysler had 5.1 per cent and 899 sales.
Leyland was also ahead in the light vans sector of the market with a massive 37.7 per cent of the market; again, Ford trailed with 18.3 per cent, and Bedford had 25.1 per cent.
So far this year, 5,222 new vehicles in the heavy sector of the market have been sold and this represents an increase of 14.5 per cent on the same period of last year.
Ford led the sector with 1,115 sales including 22 Dutch-built vehicles to take 21.3 per cent of the market, but Bedford was close behind with 956 sales and 18.3 per cent of the market, while Chrysler had 482 sales and 9.2 per cent of the market.
Overall, the market for the first nine months of this year shows a different picture. Ford leads the field with a massive 51,706 sales and 30.5 per cent of the market, while Leyland trails with 43,971 sales and 25.9 per cent of the sales.
Bedford had 32,812 sales and 19.4 per cent of the market and Chrysler trailed with 7,947 sales and 4.8 per cent.
Over the first nine months of the year, imported vehicles have grabbed 16.3 per cent of the market compared with 13.9 per cent in the same period last year.
