• The Freight Transport Association has urged the Chancellor to cut fuel duty to ensure diesel price stability while there is a threat of war in the Middle East.
In its submission prior to the pre-Budget report on 27 November the FTA says that the UK haulage industry continues to face a tax burden far greater than its Continental competitors.
It is calling for a cut in Insurance Premium Tax to offset the sharp rise in corporate liability premiums, and for the government to review its Reduced Pollution Certificate scheme.
FTA chief economist Simon Chapman says that over the past two years the haulage industry has made the supply chain more efficent and reduced costs.
The industry now needs a taxation regime to underpin the three pillars of cost, efficiency and sustainability.
Road Haulage Association chief executive Roger King agrees: 'We want to see three things: that fuel duty remains stable; a cut in insur ance premium tax; and measures to improve production and efficiency of UK manufacturing," he says.
