Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• British roads are more congested than ever before says

the Freight Transport Association, leading to huge problems for all areas of UK industry.

The FTA's Quarterly Transport Activity Survey (VAS) reveals that 75% of FTA members interviewed felt that road congestion was worse in the July-September period this year than in 2001. Statistics back up this view, revealing that this year's third quarter was marked by the sharpest increase in congestion levels since the QTAS began in 1997.

The study also reveals a continuing decline in the reliability of the rail network, with wagon and equipment short

ages exacerbating delay!

FTA chief executive Hi Turner says: ''The whole industry and the supply ci suffering. We are operati sub-standard and heavily gested roads. There 1 appalling unpredittabilit journey times."

Turner calls on the go ment to take "every po action to improve the o tion of the existing net including longer term such as motorway upg and widening.

The QTAS did include good news: the UK In industry has recorded the "widespread growth" for r six yews. Public authoriti particularly well.
