Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Words: Colin Barnett THE 1 OCTOBER Euro-5 deadline for most CVs above 3,500kg is fast approaching, with the date for lighter vans just two years away.

Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have revealed their solutions for Sprinter and Crafter, built on the same production line, but with different drivelines.

Mercedes has launched a new engine family to meet the standards. The 0M651, designed from scratch, is available in three ratings, in vehicles designated (in the case of 3.5-tonners) 310,313 and 316CDI.

The 2,143cc long-stroke engines produce approximately 10% more power and torque than their comparable predecessors, but they offer improved emissions and better fuel economy.

They feature twin Lanchester balancer shafts, increased pressure common-rail injection, and, in the two higher ratings, twin sequential turbochargers. Emission control is by a modified EGR system with a close-mounted oxidising catalyst and diesel particulate filter combined in one unit.

A new six-speed manual transmission and an improved version of the 0M642 2,987cc V6 with 440Nm complete the line-up. The new drivelines will be standard on all Sprinters from July, with a price realignment in the range of €400 (£352) either side of current prices.

A full report and driving impressions on the new vans will feature in forthcoming issues of CM.

For its Euro-5 solution on the Crafter, VW is using AdBlue in conjunction with improved common-rail injection, a diesel particulate filter and a more efficient gearbox. This will enable the Crafter Blue TDI range to exceed Euro-5 regulations and meet the EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) standard.

The VW engines develop up to 13.6% more torque and better economy, 7% is quoted for the Extra-urban figure for a CR35 109.

To allay objections to having another tank to fill, it is offering free refills of the 25-30-litre AdBlue tanks at Volkswagen Van Cen tres and authorised repairers during the first three years. We estimate you would need to visit a centre every 8,000-12,000 miles.

Other manufacturers are relying on a section of law that classifies CVs with a reference weight (effectively unladen weight) below 2,840kg as light-duty, thus deferring Euro-5 compliance to 2011.

Most Iveco Dailys will be covered by this, although the 6,500kg GVW and 4x4 versions will be getting a modified Euro-5 version of the current 3-litre engine with EGR, diesel particulate filter and twin sequential turbochargers in time for October, with ratings around 140 and 170hp.

Renault doesn't have this trouble as it has stopped taking orders for the Mascott pending a new model in 2010.
