DOWN-LICENSING tops the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' list of requests from the next Government.
Its members' problems are different from those of operators, as vehicles at present have to be type approved at the different weights at which operators want to run and tax them.
It costs the manufacturers about £10,000 per model to type approve, while down-licensing would reduce the number of weight bands for type approval and so would cut costs to both manufacturer and customer.
