Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DOUGLAS AINLEY should also have drawn attention to the importance of up-to-date records of members in his article on trade union reform in CM, March 19. This is a vital point concerning the information flow and feed back in any organisation with a scattered membership.

The Companys' Acts require that any registers of shareholders contain name, address, holding, etc. In spite of the incentive to receive dividends it is astonishing how many shareholders are "No known address". The loss of voting rights by all NKA members on any register, be it institution or trade union, can be blamed on the idle or indifferent member. In the case of Institutes it usually means loss of subscription too!

Blame the individual or the registrar as you wish, it is a significant loophole for malpractice and distortion of . results by the organisers of the survey or the ballot. Those NKA ballot papers can amount to 20 per cent of the electorate.

In a recent ballot organised by men of highest integrity (on a matter which most felt they knew the result of before the event) it was openly reported that 20,000 extra ballot papers over and above the numbers on the register had been printed. Add the normal 10 per cent, assumed NKA and a further 20,000 papers might have got into the wrong hands under different circumstances. NKA and a further 20,000 papers might have got into the wrong hands under different circumstances.

On grounds of effective subscription collection and possible malpractices, trade unions, professional and voluntary bodies large and small should do all they resonably can to catch up or at least beware the dreaded NKA! Note, the credit card organisers don't tolerate NKA's for long!

Democracy in all organisations can't be bad — Trade Unions — Institutes — the lot. Good luck to the Bill! J. A. FLETCHER
