Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ferry masters Ltd has been supplied with tipping semi-trailers on which are mounted plastics-lined pneumatic discharge ISO bulk containers equipped with a cradle at the front which enables the container to be tipped without a sub-frame. The use of York ISO plastics-lined containers by Ferrymasters was dealt with in an article, "Containers with liners: a bulk boom" in CM, December 111970.

These containers are based on York widespread bogie skeletal trailers with Edbro twin-ram front-end tipping gear and the load in the plastics bag is discharged by gravity. Vehicles with pneumatic discharge will be operated on deliveries to Scandinavia, West Germany and Northern Ireland as well as runs in the UK.

The 30ft containers are equipped with lifting cradles by Pengco (Transport Systems) Ltd, Oxney Road, Peterborough, and are fitted with Pengco rotary-valve hoppers and Roots-type air compressors, diesel driven. Hinge-pin brackets are located under the rear corner castings.

The load can be tipped in the normal way or discharged pneumatically. If required, the container may be used without a plastics lining for carrying non-bulk loads, the lining being disposable after a bulk load has been discharged. The use of a lining obviates contamination of the interior when a bulk load is carried.

Pengco claims that elimination of the tipping sub-frame has provided a weight saving of 1+ tons. The cradle is fitted with a twistlock on each side for attachment to the front corner castings. A light frame at the front of the rams holds the cradle and rams vertical when the vehicle is operating without a container.

Bulk materials are loaded through hatches in the roof. A detachable gate with a hatch is located inside the rear doors to retain the load when the container is tipped with the doors open. The hatch is opened when the load is to be discharged and the plastics lining is slit, which allows the material to flow into the rotary-valve hopper. A hose of 4in. diameter is provided for blowing the material into a storage bin. It is said that a container can be emptied in less than one hour.

The hopper is of aluminium and is readily detachable. It can be stored at the front of the trailer to reduce the likelihood of damage, particularly when the vehicle is employed on a roll-on /off service.
