Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RECENTLY in an Australian publication it was suggested that consideration was being given by English car manufacturers further to standardize components of car chassis and bodies manufactured in England. It was mentioned that the Government was exercising some gentle, but firm, pressure in this direction, in the hope that the resultant increase in output would help to meet the dollar shortage.

As technical manager of a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles I feel that some moves in that direction would more -than repay British manufacturers. Many people in this country . have a liking for the English method of engineering motor vehicles, but must often bow to. the fact that, for hard work and consistent transport under Australian conditions, American chassis prove more rugged and economical. Notable exceptions are Bedford trucks, particularly the old VX model, and the Vauxhall 25 h.p. car It is not generally realized that American car parts -are far more adaptable and interchangeable than are British parts.

As one who would like to patronize English vehicles, May [ask that sincere consideration be given to a far greater standardization of components, with frequent review of the standards to prevent stagnation. Only in this way and by the adoption of a rugged vehicle in the 16-23 hp. classes will Colonial motor markets be regained. The present preference for British vehicles will disappear as soon as the dollar shortage goes if something be not done in this direction.
