Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A number of Hanson Aggregates' owner-drivers are understood to have quit since a controversial new payment system was Introduced less than four weeks ago.

The system is being trailed in Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire for three months before being rolled out to the rest of the country where operators run more than 2,000 trucks on Hanson franchises.

One driver from the trial area claims earnings have slumped by up to £2,000 a month. -Everybody has had a gut full of the company," he says. "Morale is zero and everybody is fed up with the company."

He adds that one of the main reasons payments h slumped is because operat are no longer paid wat time, Previously they were g on a sliding scale of mile s; now they are paid rding, to the actual dise travelled.

anson spokesman David ling says the new payment system was introduced following extensive consultation with the operators concerned.

'Anybody who deals with haulage rates knows it is very difficult to get things right the first time." he points out.

"We recognise this and at the end of the trial period there are certainly things we will have to tweak." Harding adds that there were 45 trucks in the trial area. He says two of the operators who have withdrawn had done extremely well out of the old payment system.

Before the trial was launched operators had threatened to strike over the new system.
