DRIVE, enthusiasm and enterprise from the industry's workforce is a major national asset which should be encouraged, chairman of the Road Haulage Association, Ken Rogers, said in Nottingham this week.

Addressing the East Midland area annual luncheon, Mr Rogers said the industry could be described as a "mobile enterprise zone" and spoke about "the Government's wish to stimulate certain parts of the economy and to ensure that commerce and industry are given every assistance in developing and expanding their service and increasing employment."

"I would have thought that the creditable record of our industry would have encouraged the Government to help us run our business with minimum restrictions", said Mr Rogers.

"However, it seems that our industry may suffer further controls and burdens in the near future as a result of the Armitage Report recommendations."

Mr Rogers also said that haulage leads the way in terms of innovation, development and changes. In contrast with some other industries, haulage is a model of enterprise and productivity, he claimed.

THE LATE-NIGHT ban on lorries using the Finborough Road and Redcliffe Gardens one-way system in Chelsea, in London, will now operate between 9am and 6am, instead of starting at midnight.

The Greater London Council's central area planning committee has also indefinitely extended the ban operating in Bessborough Gardens, Westminster, where a ban will also exist between 9pm and 6am.
