Driver co-operation

Working temperature

Keeping the engine at its optimu working temperature should figure ne; the top of every checklist. Coming back to the Volvo test I di cussed earlier, this particular test vehic was fitted with a thermostatically co trolled fan which never once came in operation even on long climbs at 38 to gross: If this engine had been fitted wi a conventional fan a lot of fuel wou have been wasted. It is interesting note that the new Ford "H" series to I released later in the year will probab be fitted with both thermostatically co trolled fan and radiator shutters.

In terms of total fuel saving the easic avenue is by using 38 tons, but this is st in the lap of the gods at present. The main cause of high fuel cc sumption is high speed and if drivt could be persuaded to co-operate the.' substantial saving would result.
