IF FARES remained at their present levels the West Midlands PTE was heading for a staggering £46m deficit in the financial year 1978/79, its director-general, Mr Frederick Lloyd, told the West Midlands County Council transportation and highways .committee last week. The PTE estimated that the deficit, expected to be about f15m in the coming financial year, would grow to £24m in 1976/77, £34m in 1977/78. and £46m in 1978/79, if the Labour-controlled West Midlands CC continued its policy of pegging fares at January '72 levels.
