Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TN the third quarter of last year there were 209 prosecutions and 207 convictions for breaches of the law concerning drivers' hours, compared with 810 prose: cutions and 782 convictions in the third quarter of 1956. In the final quarter of 1957 there were 648 prosecutions and 565 convictions, compared with 619 and 594 respectively for the last quarter of the previous year.

In the third quarter there were 668 prosecutions and convictions for failure to keep proper records. This compared with 1,644 prosecutions and 1,622 convictions in the third quarter of 1956. In the final quarter of last. year there were 1,407 prosecutions and 1,345 convictions, as against 1,515 and 1,440 respectively in the last three months of 1956.

This information was given to Mr. Ernest Davies in a written reply last week by Mr. G. R. H. Nugent, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, who explained that the low cylindered oil engine: figures for the third quarter of 1957 were the result of examiners having been employed on fuel rationing until May of that year. Some time was required to prepare cases for prosecution.

NEW AMBULANCE BASE

A NEW ambulance station at York 2-1. costing £21,000 was officially opened on Wednesday by Mr. J. P. Dodds. Under-Secretary to the Ministry of Heath. The depot can accommodate 13 ambulances, and incorporates offices, a radiocommunication control room, kitchens and shower baths.

The workshops have facilities for maintenance and general repair work, and at the rear of the building there is a concrete parking area, with an adjoining washing bay.

Last year, York ambulances covered 161,864 miles carrying 57,301 persons. in the peak year of 1954, the mileage was 180,000. It is hoped that continued radio control will reduce mileage even further.
