TWO Torquay coach concerns will be taken over by Wallace Arnold Tours, Ltd., on April 1. They are Cream Cars (Torquay), Ltd., and Sunbeam Garages (Torquay), Ltd„ who between them operate 15 coaches on excursions and tours and private,hire.

Wallace Arnold already control Waverley Motor Coach Tours, Ltd., Paignton, Ruby Tours, Ltd., Paignton, and Excelsior Coaches (Torquay), Ltd. These three companies are under centralized management, and will shortly become known as Wallace Arnold (Devon), Ltd. Although most of the staff on the newly acquired concerns will be retained, there will be some superfluity when the companies come under the same central control.

Wallace Arnold now operate well over 200 coaches, as they are in association with about 17 companies.

756.500 VEHICLES IN HOLLAND: AUSTRIAN EXPORTS UP

THERE are now 756,500 vehicles in

Holland-15 per cent. more than a year ago. Of this total, 134,000 are goods vehicles, 5,100 trailers, 8,300 buses and 5,800 special types, such as fire appliances. The Royal Dutch Automobile Club say that Holland is lagging behind other European countries in the number of its vehicles.

In Austria, the number of vehicles registered at the end of January was 772,636. A total of 97,059 vehicles was first registered in 1957, some 43,000 having been domestically produced. The Austrian motor industry's exports rose by 15 per cent. last year.

LEYLAND ENGINES IN U.S. LORRIES

SATISFACTORY results have already been gained by the Transvaal Provincial Administration from converting Americanpetrol-engined lorries to oilers with Leyland 0.350 units. T.P.A. ordered 205 Leyland engines for installation in American vehicles with a gross rating of 10 tons, and half the units have so far been fitted at a cost of £1,000 per vehicle, including chassis overhaul.

The converted vehicles are returning 12.7 m.p.g. at an average speed of 29.7 m.p.h., an improvement upon the performance of the petrol engines, which had a life of only 50,000 miles.

DELHI BUSES' AVERAGES

Worldmaster 61-passenger buses operated by the Delhi Transport Service are averaging 11.5-12 m.p.g. Drivers like the two-pedal control.

Albion single-deckers and Leyland Comets delivered up to 10 years ago are still returning about 13 m.p.g. after having covered big mileages, whilst up to 15 m.p.g. is being averaged by 170 1954-55 Comets with light-alloy bodies.
