An I.C. Engine Cable Set.

This week, as last, We have to draw attention to an improved and novel design of motor-driven balance or oneway plough. The present invention, No. 112,815, by W. J. and A. Mcl3ain, possesses many interesting points, and it is of sufficient importance for us to give it the place of honour this week. It concerns an internal-combustion-enginecl cable ploughing set, and the patent covers the whole arrangement, including the anchors, at each end of the field, for the cables. The object of the patentees has clearly been to devise a set of tackle which could be operatell with the minimum of labour.

The mobile unit of the set comprises a four-cylinder petrol engine which drives thl.ough a clutch and gearing a pair of spindles inter-geared ,one with another, on which are mounted loosely the drums for the cable. Claw clutches provide for one or other of these drums being coupled to the corresponding spindle. This machinery is carried on a light frame supported on a single axle, and on either side, balanced about this axle, are the ploughs, one set for ploughing in one direction, the other for use when returning. The customary small depth wheel is provided at the .outer end of each set of ploughs, and this supplies the 'necessary third point of support for the machine. Steering is effected through the medium of the main axle, the wheels being mounted on stub axles on the Ackermann principle. One of these wheels, designed to run in the furrow, is larger than • the other—the land wheel. Duplicate sets of control gear and steering wheel are provided, and in conjunction With these a seat is fitted to eakh set of ploughs for convenience of driving in either direction. An important feature of this invention is in connection with the design of the anchors for the cable. One of these is 'shown in the drawing. With each anchor is incorporated a device whereby it is enabled automatically to 'advance the requisite distance to enable-a new set of fiuxows to be tamed.

Detail Improvements.

Another carburetter patent, 112;975, by C. Storr, provides passages through the float to facilitate the entry of fuel.

The same patentee, in 113704, de

scribes a construction of cylinder, the head being of metial a a higher coefficient of friction than the barrel, the design of the joint being such that as the cylinder is heated it automatically tightens the joint.

A. W. Southey, 112,962. A carburetter for heavy fuel which combines the principles of jets and surface carburetters._

A non-skid for pnetinratics is the sub-ject of specification 115,018, by J. Briggs. A. number of steel pads are bolted to the cover by means of countersunk bolts, the nuts being inside the tyre, and covered by a three or four. ply flap of canvas.

It. McDougall, in 113,020, shows a method of frame construction whereby a light narrow frame carries the engine • and -transmission, long cross members being attached to frame and springs.

In 113,073, H. Hagens patents a construction of built-up crankshaft.

0. J. Willmott, No. 112,704, describes a combinedtscotch and sprag which is designed to form a permanent portion of the mechanism of a chassis.
