OMB has just bought Translift, whose road/rail waste-transfer system is already running in Holland. Each rail wagon takes three standard 20m3 containers, loaded from the side onto a low-profile turntable. "We want to separate waste collection from transportation," says Jerry van den Pol, pointing out that the whole unload/reload cycle can take as little as eight minutes. Scania's factory-built 4-Series towline cab, first seen at last years !WM, is now in production with either steel or kneeling air suspension. The chassis is a standard P940 model: 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 versions are available, with the usual complement of rear-steer and twin-steer options and Allison World Series automatic transmissions Piaggio's Porter, powered by a 1.4-litre, 38hp diesel engine, is available with a variety of specialist bodies: pickups, tippers and now this refuse collection body, made by Rossi. The R106 is offered with a 2m3 aluminium or steel body for a payload of up to 510kg, at the bargain price of just 110,995 (exVAT)—the bin lift is a£2,000 option. The prize for the most overspecified vehicle of the show must surely go to this Iveco EuroTrakker 4x4, one of nine to be used by the London Borough of Barnet on gritting duty. Does Barnet know something about climate change that we don't? Behind the EuroTrakker is a Cargo 130E15 with a Johnston sweeper body; Iveco was also promoting the versatility of the Daily City Truck, displaying a wheelie bin washer, a crew-cab tipper and an impressive Versalift access platform with a working height of 12.5m.
