Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We are agais able to congratulate the Tramways and Motors

• Committee, of the Sheffield Corporation, of which committee Alderman W. E. Clegg is chairman, upon thepaying results of its motor-omnibus section. The accompanying reproduction from the annual report shows a summary of the income and expenditure account.

Sheffield Corporation has very wisely increased its motorbus fares by approximately 25 per cent., although this increase does not cover, we understand, more than a sinall portion of the period for which the present accounts are rendered—for the year ended the 25th March last. It will be seen that there has been generous provision made, on the expenditure side, both for allowance's to dependents of employees,

and for depreciation. The depredation set aside for motorbuses, during the previous three years, was the following : year ;ended 25th March, 1914, 21360; year ended 25th March, 1915, 21655; year ended 25th March, 1916, £2549.

It is interesting to note that the total motorbus running was 620,196 miles during the year under review. The expenses per motorbus-mile were the following : traffic, 3.69d. ; general, 0.32. ; repairs, 3.27d. ; road maintenance contributions (statutory), 0.13d. ; petrol, 2.43d. ; allowances to dependents serving with the Forces, 0.17d. The total expenses are thus seen to be 10.01d., whilst the revenue was 13.32d. The balance carried to net revenue account represents 3.31d. per motorbus-mile.

We venture to think that not a, few municipal authorities in the United Kingdom might with advantage send a deputation to Sheffield, instead of continuing to decry motorbuses.
