ONDON TRANSPORT EXECUTIVE I--+ were accused of "gross mismanagement' in the final stages of the Transport and General Workers' Union conference at Brighton last week.
The attack came from some of its own busmen employees who wanted an independent inquiry into the undertaking.
In turn, the London busmen themselves came under heavy fire from their provincial colleagues, who accused them of selfishness and treated the conference to a most unbrotherly display.
In the end the inquiry demand was withdrawn, though it was made clear that a request for an inquiry into the bus industry on a national basis is likely to be put forward by the busmen's national committee.
The debate was on a resolution which declared that the conference was seriously concerned with the continued crisis in London Transport, resulting in higher fares, more waiting, less buses for the travelling public and worsening conditions for bus workers. b
The conference also passed a resolution expressing concern that the Ministry did not exercise sufficient supervision over enforcement of the Road Traffic Act. 1960.
It mentioned specifically drivers' hours and periods of rest and the keeping of records.
It requested the union's executive "10 bring these matters, and the concern they occasion us, to the close attention of the Minister."
