FINES totalling £230 were imposed on a Cardiff haulage firm and six of their employees at Cardiff last week, after they had pleaded guilty to what the Stipendiary Magistrate described as " part of a very grave national scandal."

Whannall Contractors. Ltd., Cardiff, and six of their drivers, were before the court on a number of charges. The six drivers were fined a total of £102 and ordered to pay one guinea costs each, on a total of 17 offences relating to failing to keep current records, driving a lorry without at least 10 consecutive hours of rest in a day, and driving for more than 11 hours in 24. The firm was fined 128 for permitting their employees to commit the offences.

Giving his decision, the Magistrate said: "This case lifts the curtain a very little bit in a very grave national scandal that most people are at great pains to hush Up.', TRANSPORT ASSOC. OFFICERS hfiR. T. ATKINS, managing director LIU of Caledonian Road Services (Caledonian), Ltd., Dumfries, has been elected chairman of The Transport Association. The vice-chairmen are Mr. K. Beresford (Beresford Transport, Ltd., Tunstall) and Mr. E. Price (T. J. E. Price (Cardiff), Ltd.).
