Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE 10 per cent. increase in rail charges for carrying fish, which British Railways have told Hull Fish Merchants Protection Association they propose introducing on August 1, may cost the railways more than £1 m, a year in dock business at Hull. The Hull fish merchants who, at present, send approximately 80,000 tons of fish a year to inland towns by rail, are now looking at the possibilities of road transport.

Mr. Ian Class, president of the association, said: "The 10 per cent_ increase is savage and we resent the manner in which it has been imposed, without room being left for negotiation or discussion. At present about 60 per cent. of the fish landed at Hull is transported from the port by rail. A 10 per cent, increase in rail charges will put more than /100,000 on the fish merchants annual transport bill."

The 10 per cent, suggested widened the gap already existing between road and rail rates, and those continuing to send by rail would no longer be competitive with those using road transport. Mr. Class concluded: "We are far from satisfied with the way the railways have been treating • the Hull fish wholesalers. If they put up their charges much more the merchants who have been loyal to the railways will no longer be able to compete with those who use road transport."

Hire Charges Revised

THE document known as RH/D/20 giving rates schedules for weekly and daily hire of road vehicles has been brought up to date by the Road Haulage Association. The schedules were first issued for the purpose of hiring vehicles by the Ministry of Transport and have since been adopted by other public bodies, such as Government departments and local authorities and by the public generally.

The rates vary according to carrying capacity and according to the grade of wages applicable. Separate schedules are issued for flat vehicles and tippers.
