LONDON ASSOCIATION'S JUBILEE A.G.M.

A satisfactory position was revealed at the A.G.M. of the London and Home Counties Haulage Contractors Association, last Monday. The meeting received the report of the presiā€¢ dent. Mr. J. H. Turner, O.B.E.

It was ntentioned in this report that the year 1939 was important in the history of the Association, as being its jubilee. If as much was accomplished in the next 50 years as had been in the past 50 years, the future well-being of the industry was amply assured.

In this connection it was also mentioned that Mr. R. P. Bailey had been secretary for the past 20 of the 50 years, and was to retire in the near future. Warm thanks were expressed Lo him for his untiring efforts on behalf of the Association and the industry in genera l

The Association, it was stated, hoped to be successful in securing a remedy for the anomalous position resulting from the Young Persons Employment Act, which involved several practical difficulties,

Internal Peculiarity.

A.R.O. tells us that it desires to correct any misunderstanding that may have arisen through a statement, made at a meeting of the Devon and Cornwall Area Committee, that it was decided to support the South-Eastern Artsrt in its protest against the proposal of headquarters to take away the right possessed by areas to communicate directly with one another. This statement, says A.R.O. in London, is a complete misrepresentation of the attitude of headquarters, which never at any time proposed to "take away the right possessed by areas to communicate directly with one another."

Dundee Transport Workers' Protest on Wages Move.

A special meeting of the Dundee branch of the Transport and General Workers Union on Sunday last heard an address by Mr. John Veitch, area secretary, Glasgow. The meeting adopted a resolution in which it condemned the action of the Scottish Horse and Motormen's representatives .in agreeing that Scotland be divided into three geographical grades, with Glasgow and district as the only place in Grade I, and including in Grade 2 such places as Dundee, Edinburgh, Leith and Aberdeen, and in Grade 3 the remaining parts of Scotland; also in agreeing to geographical grading, with the full knowledge that the question of wage rates applicable to the grading had been referred back to the Central Wages Board.

.1. he resolution called on the workers' side Qf the Central Wages Board to refuse In recognize this grading and to insist that all towns included in the grading previously agreed to by the Scottish Area Wages Board be included in Grade 1. It was decided to take action unless Dundee and district road-transport workers were included in Grade 1.

Over 17,000 at Leicester Exhibition.

It is now learnt that 17,346 people attended the exhibition held by Leicester and County Chamber of Commerce Traffic Section, in collaboration with the B.R.F. During the course of the week, talks were also given by a Federation representative to 5,000 children at various schools in the area;

Many tributes were paid to the progressive spirit of the chairman and members of the Traffic Section of the Chamber of Commerce, in staging this exhibition, and it is probable that a number of other important chambers of commerce will follow Leicester's example.

WEST COUNTRY A.R.O. AND MILK HAULIERS.

The attention of the Devon and Cornwall Area Committee of A.R.O. has been drawn to the formation of a company known as Associated British_ Milk Carriers, Ltd., which has been circularizing milk hauliers in Cornwall, The committee has unanimously passed a resolution expressing its opinion that persons appointed as directors should have an intimate knowledge of the conditions under which milk is hauled and should be operators having the confidence and e esteem of their fellow-operators,

Successful Follow-up of Leicester.

Following the Leicester exhibition, the B.R.F. model was exhibited at Messrs. Nesham's Garage in Middlesbrough. This exhibition was opened by Councillor H. French, chairman of the local branch of the National " Safety First " Association, who stressed the need for better roads.
