Statistics which have recently been published by the Minister of Transport show that during April, 1931, the total number of passenger journeys (excluding season-ticket holders) taken on all standard-gauge railways in Great Britain was 94,678,266, a decrease of 5,397,383 as compared with April, 1930. The receipts from this source showed a decrease of £532,936.
The total tannage of freight conveyed (excluding free-hauled traffic) was 22,586,656, a decrease of 2,938,550 tons, as compared with April, 1930. Freighttrain receipts amounted to £7,490,471, a figure £679,603 below that for the comparable month of the previous year. The freight-train miles run were 783,969 less than in April, 1930—a decrease of 7 per cent.
