resulted in 16% of the vehicles checked attracting immediate prohibitions, owing to their "appalling standard of maintenance".
Under Operation Mermaid, Essex Police checked 43 trucks at Thurrock Services on 15 January. Of these, seven were deemed to be unroadworthy and prohibited from travelling, and five were stopped because their drivers had exceeded their drivers' hours limits.
More than £1,000 was collected from 10 drivers who were issued with Graduated Fixed Penalties.
