CM COVER STORY

dominic.perryfarbi,co.uk HAULIERS WORKING in the construction sector are set to face another bleak year if a pessimistic forecast from the Construction Products Association (CPA) proves accurate.

The CPA predicts that the construction sector as a whole will contract a further 3% in 2010, following last year's 12.1% fall in output, the sharpest fall on record.

According to the CPA, this will mean the construction industry "will have suffered a deeper and more prolonged recession than the economy as a whole-.

Construction in the public sector has ensured the falls in output have not been even deeper, the association notes: "Public spending in areas such as housing, education and transport infrastructure now accounts for 40% of construction work, and this has helped to limit the effects of the sharp falls within the private sector."

Both Chancellor Alistair Darling and his opposition number George Osbourne have said public-sector spending will fall post election. The CPA adds: "With economic and construction recovery already expected to be slow, halving public construction spending could extend the industry's recession beyond the anticipated three years."

Bob Swain, managing director of Rochester, Kent firm R Swain, says: "It's going to he a gloomy year with enforced government cutbacks. It leaves you wondering if the major projects like Crossrail are going to be kept on track."

The finn also has a plant haulage operation. Swain, however, believes the firm is sufficiently diversified that it will be able to cope with any construction downturn.
