A model year

0 ood news for die-cast anoraks such as yours truly. The latest from Corgi is that in order to preserve the rarity and collectability of its models the company is going to be tightening up the production rims in 1999.

For example, the scale BRS Premium Edition BRS Rescue Scammell Contractor will be limited to a run of 2,000 (with "limited edition" numbers stamped into the chassis). Also in 1:50 scale is the Modern Trucks series, and Corgi has three new models in the pipeline. In February we can look forward to a Renault Premium Curtainsider in Norbert Dentressangle's livery; in May it will be joined by a TNT MAN box trailer (featuring TNT's new livery); and in June look out for a Leyland Daf powder tanker in the red, white and blue livery of Cyril Knowles, whose main contract is with Civil Marine Slag Cement.

World beater

e's only been and gone and done it! John West, [1] 56, appeared in these pages (CM 19-25 Nov

1998) as he got down to some serious training to compete for the World Powerlifting title in Atlanta, USA. John was sponsored by Security Omega Express—he works as an HGV driver at its Hatfield distribution centre. Originally from Ireland, John has lived in Welwyn Garden City since the seventies where he discovered Powerlifting while training to be a hammer thrower. He is the reigning European Powerlifting Champion (in one day in 1992 he broke 12 world records at the World Senior Championships) and now he has returned home as world champion in the 100kg weight class for the 55-60 age group. In a gesture of solidarity the Hawk will indulge in a little powerlifting by way of raising a glass and saying cheers to the champ!

Something fishy's going on

hen it comes to car security nothing is too much for the Hawk's trusty Reliant Robin. But just when the old bird thought he could sleep easy, along comes a new menace. The RAC warns of a gang of car thieves in South-East London (the Hawk's patch!) who are stealing car keys left on hall tables by hooking them out through the letter box. Already the gang has stolen several high powered cars (the Robin could be next) using this method known as "hooking". The RAC says: "Look out for people carrying fishing rods in a built-up area where there's no sign of water."

Photographic memory

iihe Hawk knows he can rely on the sharp wit and the keen eye of his loyal CM readers. Last year we printed a picture sent in by Peter Edmonds of Ansty Cross in Dorchester (CM 15-21 Oct 1998). It was taken in 1951 and showed J Edmonds & Sons' fleet at its farm in Maidstone, Kent. Peter said between 1939 and 1950 J Edmonds ran four Tilling Steven lorries which had been converted from 1929 East Kent single-decker buses. Sadly, he had no pictures of these lorries. Now MC Doolan of Browns Green, Birmingham, has sent in this photo of a Tilling Stevens FN9925. Mr Doolan says he would be delighted for Mr Edmonds to have the picture. Don't you love a happy ending?
