IN New European laws to regulate tyre noise are likely to be costly and of little practical benefit when they are introduced early in 1995, say transport industry experts.
One EC transport official believes that current efforts to reduce truck and bus tyre noise from 89dBA to a proposed limit of 80dBA are misguided, expensive, and "detract from the need to build better road surfaces".
The proposals have arisen because mechanical noise has been so markedly reduced over the past five years.
Manufacturers agree that tyre design is less important than road surface design. But a Michelin spokesman denies that additional research costs would be passed on to hauliers as a result of the legislation.
