• Swansea-based Tony Williams Traction Services' 0-licence was renewed for 12 months after South Wales Traffic Commissioner John Mervyn Pugh was given assurances that back duty owed had been paid.
Williams had applied to renew his licence for four vehicles and four trailers. Consideration of the licence renewal had previously been adjourned by Deputy Traffic Commissioner Gerrard Sullivan to give proprietor William Anthony Williams time in which to pay the outstanding back duty after taxing his vehicles at the private light goods rate (CM 3-9 December).
Assuring the Commissioner that the back duty had been paid, Williams said that he had been in severe fmancial difficulties.
The choice was not to tax the vehicles properly or lose his house. He agreed that maintenance problems had led to the duration of the licence being cut in December 1991.
Accepting that a prohibition had been issued after a load sensing valve had been disconnected, Williams said that it had since been reconnected.
Renewing the licence with a warning, and directing that any further renewal be considered at a public inquiry, Mervyn Pugh said that Williams was still on a learning curve.
