by Brian Weatherley • Commercial Motor has uncovered more details of the light middleweight truck models due to replace MAN's long-serving G90 range some time in 1994.

The existing line-up of six-11 tonne rigids, equipped with the jointly-developed MAN-VW cab will be superseded by a new range including a 75 tonner, which is likely to extend beyond the current G90 top weight limit —possibly even to 13 tonnes.

The new chassis will be fitted with a revised version of the Steyr middleweight cab and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 75 and 112kW(100150hp) for Euro-1 emission levels, with higher ratings expected to coincide with Euro-2 legislation due in 1995/96.

The stylish all-steel Steyr cabin will be modified to give it a distinctive MAN identity, probably through the use of unique exterior panels.

The four-pot turbo diesel will be based on the existing 4.58-litre four-cylinder 75kW(100hp) D0824GF01 naturally-aspirated engine fitted in the 8.100 7.5-tonner sold on the Continent, but with a heavily revised cylinder head and injection equipment.

MAN Truck and Bus UK only sells the more powerful 8.150 and 10.150 chassis,driven by the 6.87litre unblown straight six engine. Before October it will be modified to meet Euro-1 but will eventually be replaced by the turbo four when the new range arrives.

MAN's decision to develop a turbocharged four-pot follows Iveco's adoption of a similar capacity turbocharged four in the latest EuroCargo. The Munich truck maker says that turbocharging will ensure compliance with future emissions legislation.

The final introduction date for the new range has yet to be set. MAN is saying little beyond the fact that the new models are "in the far future", indicating that the replacement programme is likely to take place over an extended period. Commercial Motor understands that the first left-handdrive Euro-1 models are unlikely to break cover much before the middle of next year.
