Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Founded only two years ago, Transfleet Services Ltd, Stirling, Scotland, specialist in commercial vehicle hiring and consultant to hauliers on transport, anticipates that within the next five years it will have 3-4000 vehicles operating from strategically situated depots throughout the country.

As part of the company's de-centralization scheme, three new centres, close to towns and motorway access points, are to be opened so that all of the services offered can be made available to customers in their own immediate locality.

Transfleet's hiring contracts, drawn up to customers' specific requirements, include vehicles taxed, insured and maintained to fleet standard with drivers who carry out day to day checks on the vehicles which are supplied in the customers' own liveries for long-term contracts. Trained engineers also undertake inspection of vehicles in the field, enabling the operator to budget for forthcoming repairs.

Existing depots at Stirling, Birtley, Rotherham and Manchester have been built with standard workshops comprising a module 60ft long by 15ft high, for the acceptance of the largest vehicles. Companies can bring their transport in for repair at any of the centres and hire similar units on a short-term truck rental basis. The service department is also fully equipped for the fitting and reconditioning of fifth wheel couplings.

Another service provided by Transfleet is that of consultant to small hauliers unaware of the complexity of operating costs and for whom a standard accounting system is arranged.

On the vehicle side, specially equipped box vans and platforms featuring the latest in multi-purpose utilization have been designed for Transfleet Services by Cravens Homalloy (Preston) Ltd. Twelve of these units are in current use and are mounted on Ford D0607 and D1010 chassis and Leyland Comets.

Mr S. F. Gregory, Transfleet's national vehicle operations manager and chairman of the FTA national technical committee, commented: "We can supply vehicles ranging from 3 tons unladen weight, up to 32 gtw and because our yearly purchase of trucks varies between 350 and 700 units we are able to secure the benefits of competitive pricing".

In the near future the company intends to introduce a pooling system with vehicles interchangeable on demand.
