For removing millscale

ASUBSTANCE called Ferropaste for removing millscale on metal has been introduced by Surface Treatment Ltd. The paste, which contains acids, can be applied with a knife or scraper on horizontal or vertical surfaces.

The preparation is claimed to dissolve scale and rust, the treated surface subsequently being washed down with water. The surface can then be painted with anti-corrosive emulsion primer, followed by the recommended finishing coat or coats.

Alternator with regulator .

AT important feature of a new 24V, 30amp. Paris-Rhone alternator introduced by Autocar Marine and Diesel Co. Ltd. is that it incorporates a regulator. This is mounted on three terminal posts co-axially with the rotor and directly cooled by the air stream of the fan. It is transistorized with printed-eircuit connections and equipped with fully capsulated components. In addition to simplifying installation it virtually eliminates wiring-up errors. The posts also act as electrical connections of the earth, field and main output.

Maximum output is obtained at a rotor speed of 4,000 r.p.m. and the unit is said to be particularly suitable for 'medium-powered diesel engines, notably for the power units of coaches which have a high electrical load. The alternator costs E41 15s. and in atypical case of a burnt-out generator and regulator, replacement is no more costly then renewal of the original equipment.

Autocar Marine and Diesel are sole UK concessionaires for Prestolite alternators imported from America as well as for ParisRhone alternators, but in the latter case only on a replacement unit basis.

Frame size of the new alternator is 13cm. and this corresponds to the frame of a Paris-RhOne 12V, 35/40amp. machine with a separate regulator, having a rated maximum output r.p.m. of 2,300. Another 12V machine witti a 16cm. frame, produces 80amp. at 2,300 r.p.m. and a 24V unit has an output of 50amp. at the same speed.

Installation of all units is closely supervised by Autocar Marine and Diesel, notably with regard to mounting and the use of themost suitable types of pulley and belt. An adjustable mounting bracket is available that provides for installation in about 60 per cent of standard applications. Special brackets are supplied for more difficult" cases and installation instructions in Sheet form are issued.

It is claimed that the most important "selling points" of the units are their greater reliability and longer life, compared with conventional generators and the improved battery life they provide by virtue of the Increased charging rate at low, speeds and the avoidance of heavy charge and discharge rates.

Marketed by: Autocar Marine and Diesel Co. Ltd., Stonhouse Street, London SW4.

Cargo pump for tankers

ACARGO pump for use on road tankers which is specially suitable to be driven by a low voltage d.c. motor is one of a range produced by Stainless Steel Purips Ltd. It is a 2 in.-bore unit bearing the model number 200 ND and can be used for handling a wide variety of liquids which need to be protected against contamination that can occur from the inability of the operator to completely clean the pump when changing from orie commodity to another.

All the pumps in this ND range have a completely isolated pumping chamber that contains no driving gears or other items likely to cause contamination. In addition the end plate of the pumping chamber can be easily removed for cleaning purposes withoutthe need to use special tools—in 30 sec. It is also possible to easily remove the two 3-lobe rotors from their shafts.

The units are available with either mechanical-gland seals or stuffing boxes as required, and all wetted parts are constructed in 18/8/3 stainless steel as standard. In addition to the standard unbalanced mechanical seals and stuffing-box glands, highpressure balanced seals can be fitted with sealing faces and joint rings manufactured from materials suitable for the service to be performed.

For handling products, where small particles of solid matter are contained in suspension, rotors are covered in good-quality, tasteless Neoprene. Also supplied are rotors made from moisture stabilized nylon.

The pumps are manufactured with capacities of up to 10,000 g.p.h. and will operate at pressures of up to 175 p.s.i. Two valves are provided for in the range; one is a spring-loaded relief valve and the other a manually operated by-pass valve. Both these units are interchangeable one with the • other. The spring-loaded valve is adjustable and both valve units are contained in the removable end plates making them easily fitted or removed.

The company will supply almost any kind of drive arrangement from a Simple vee-belt to self-contained diesel-driven units, including any type of variable speed arrangement. When supplied for road tank use electrically driven, the motor used is the CAV TM724-13 and the drive is by a single timing-type toothed-belt. Made by: Stainless Steel Pumps Ltd., Finmere Road, Eastbourne, Sussex.
