Out of 72 major 100' octane projects 32 have been completed and the remaining 40 will be In ptoduction in four months: Nearly 2200,000,000 is being invested in these plants —considerably exceeding the amount for synthetic rubber. More than 75 per. cent. of the expenditure is being financed by the oil Companies. There are 200 other minor auxiliary plants, mostly . added to ,those existing, some small, some large, including two ,cOmplete refineries. They are scattered all over the country. From 8 to 16. months are requited to construct a -100-octane plant, each one being, more or less, different from the others, dependent upon the refinery conditions and equipment where it will operate, and on the quality of the crude oil concerned. BOTH in this country and in Li America glues of the syn-. thetic-resin type are being developed. These will stick wood to wood or to metal, plastics to wood or Metal, or all three to any of the others. Laboratory tests have, demonstrated the strength of such glued joints to resist tension better than a riveted joint. They are corrosion-resisting and, so far -as is known, permanent. The American product of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. is a secrst; it has been developed in conjunction with the Chrysler Motor Corporation. it is entirely synthetic and an almost coal-black liquid which is sprayed or painted on the surfaces to be joined. Heat and pressure are necessary. For metal to metal, the plastic is formed. into a thin black tape, the thickness of a typewriter ribbon and twice as wide. It is laid between the surfaces and bonds up to the ribbon width. The English process is called Redux and is controlled by Aero Research Ltd., Duxford, Cambridge, which issues licences for its operation.

issue of " Transport Topics," of Washington, says that Colonel E. S. Gorrell, President, Air Transport Association of America, has strongly defended independence of Al-nerica's civil aviation from domination by other forms of transport, and warmly praised the non-encroachment position taken up by the American Trucking Associations.at their recent annual meeting. He branded as fallacious railway arguments that if they were permitted to control other forms of transport it would be possible to obtain a greater co-ordination of a nation-wide service. A dontestic monopoly of transport was inimical to the public interest. Co-ordination and such terms advanced by the railways often

mean nothing else than control, the ultimate purpose being to protect their investments and to have railway management, rather than the requirements of the public, determine the rate of growth.

AFTER watching the difficulties of a conductress changing silver on an earlymorning bus, a Liverpool citizen decided, 12 months ago, -to tender the exact fare every day. Daring the whole year he faithfully kept to this resolution—and is still doing so. We suggest that it is not too late to make this your New Year war-effort resolution. It would help both pas
