As LF7s proliferate across Europe, owner-driver Dick Flu] calls for the EU to take the lead on harmonisation.

Early in 2008 had an Eminox system (Euro 4 PM) fitted to Euro-2 Renault Premium and set off for two trips into Europe through seven countries. In Germany, I registered my MAUT tax declaration as now being Euro-4, and the system acceptE this. At the Swiss frontier, I produced my Reduced Pollution Certificate and my Eminox 'Declaration of Installation of an Exhaust Abatement Device', and requested that my Swiss roi tax 'ID Card' be upgraded to the Euro-3/4 category.

The officer dismissed the RPC but accepted the Eminox document, and upgraded my ID Card.

As from January 2008 at least 60 LEZs are in force or proposed in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK— and they mostly diffE in their requirements.

Laudable intentions are simply not enough and, as in English law, ignorance is no excuse. But countries are alreac succeeding in getting away with their half-baked schemes.

What is important to us is the quality of the air we breathe, especially in our cities. To me, having experienced the Lond( smogs in the 1950s, these LEZs are tinkering at the edges. They might make a difference, but not a big one.

What we desperately need is a Directive to all EU states from the EU Council of Ministers defining exactly what is required to harmonise these LF7s.

Is there any authority we can trust to determine this? The politicians mostly haven't a clue about the logistics required Europe to provide their evening meal, let alone how the hotE or apartment they stay in happened to arrive.

We, the people behind the wheel of the delivery trucks, ne to know exactly where we stand — in simple terms.

"To me, having experienc London smogs in the 1950s low-emission zones are tin at the edges"
