UGHT VANS ARE the fastestgrowing category of traffic on UK roads, according to the latest figures from the Department for Transport (DfT), Provisional figures comparing 2007 and 2006 indicate that light van traffic was 9% higher, against an increase in LGVs of just 1% and a decrease in cars of 1%. Overall traffic levels fell by 0.9%. Cars account for 78% of all traffic on the roads, light vans 14%, LGVs 6% and other vehicles 2%.

Delays on the slowest journeys got worse, according to the provisional figures, with vehicle delays on the slowest 10% of journeys going up from 3.78 to 4.05 minutes per 10 miles.

The final figures will be published in July.
